Pablo Casals and his wife Martita, visited Israel in August 1973. They were accompanied by violinists Isaac Stern and Alexander Schneider.
They came to Jerusalem, to work with a youth orchestra, which Pablo Casals would conduct.
The Israeli PM at the time, Golda Meir, invited Casals to come and celebrate his 100th birthday - due in December that same year - in Israel. But, as it turns out, Mrs. Meir was somewhat premature, because Casals was born in 1876 and not in 1873...
Sadly, he died in October, during our Yom Kipur War, 2 months before "the special birthday", according to Golda Meir.
The photographs shown here were taken during a rehearsal with the Youth Orchestra, held in the Jerusalem Chan Theater. | Back to Features (Picture Stories)
